We are seeking a dedicated Research Fellow to join an innovative research project housed at Cornell Law School’s Center on the Death Penalty Worldwide. This is an interdisciplinary project, led by national experts in the death penalty, gender studies and computational linguistics, that aims to shed light on the understudied phenomenon of gender bias in the cases of women on death row. This project, funded in part by a National Science Foundation grant, uses a unique, interdisciplinary methodology combining discourse analysis and computational linguistics to analyze how courtroom actors express gender bias in the criminal trials of women facing the death penalty. 


The Research Fellow will play a pivotal role by directly supervising the student research assistants, conducting qualitative data analysis, and coding trial transcript data. This position offers a unique opportunity for someone with an interest in interdisciplinary research in gender studies and the law, and provides the chance to make significant contributions to the understanding of gender bias in the criminal legal system.


This grant funded appointment is for a one-year term and is benefits eligible. The selected candidate may choose to work in Ithaca, NY or remotely (pending university approval if working outside New York State). Please note that the New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working outside New York State.


The anticipated start date is December 1, 2024.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and oversee qualitative research, including coding and analysis of trial transcripts for all women currently on death row in the United States.
  • Supervise and mentor a research team comprised of law students.
  • Analyze data to identify patterns of gender and intersectional bias.
  • Assist in organizing and leading team meetings to ensure progress on project goals.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of research findings, including in academic and general-audience publications and presentations for attorneys and judges.

Required Qualifications:

  • JD or PhD (ABD is fine) in Communication, Sociolinguistics, Rhetoric-Composition, or related field.
  • Strong interest in gender studies and the criminal legal system.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and team management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a research team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in qualitative research—including coding and data analysis.
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis software (MaxQDA in particular).

The starting salary for this position will be $65,000.

  

Pay Range:

$61,008.00 - $87,000.00
