Assistant or Associate Professor in Scenic Design

Assistant or Associate Professor in Scenic Design

Cornell University’s Department of Performing and Media Arts seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor in Scenic Design for a tenure-track position beginning July 1, 2025.

We are looking for a dynamic and innovative designer to teach undergraduate students in our major and minor in Performing and Media Arts. Our interdisciplinary department teaches theory and practice in theatre, film, dance, performance, installation, and devised work, in increasingly unusual and experimental ways.

The candidate’s courses would be determined by departmental needs and the candidate’s particular area(s) of expertise, but could both uphold and challenge training traditions in a range of performance and filmmaking techniques. We are interested in candidates who can work in both live and mediated performance. Ability to teach in more than one area of design is a plus. Potential course offerings might include Production Design, Set Design, Worldbuilding, Lighting for Theatre, Lighting for Film, and/or Projection Design.

The successful candidate will teach the equivalent of two courses each semester, some of which may be as designer on departmental productions and pursue a professional career beyond Cornell. We are interested in recruiting candidates who have demonstrated an ongoing, successful engagement with the highest standards of professional/creative activity and teaching, consistent with the expectations for excellence in a Research I university.

The Department of Performing and Media Arts is committed to the development of a campus climate that supports equality and diversity. We offer B.A. and Ph.D. degrees in a liberal arts environment that allows a wide range of students to study and explore live and mediated forms of creativity and expression (film, theatre, dance, immersive installation, etc.). More information is available at https://pma.cornell.edu.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter (including a statement about their practice and about their approach to teaching), a curriculum vitae, a design portfolio, and three letters of recommendation. We ask applicants for all faculty positions to share their approaches to fostering learning, research, service, and outreach in a diverse community. Applicants may choose to submit a stand-alone statement or embed the information in other parts of their application materials. All materials should be submitted through Academic Jobs Online https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/28608.

The candidate must have either an MFA or Ph.D officially awarded no later that July 1, 2025.

The deadline for applications is November 1, 2024.

Pay Range: $83,200 - $150,000. Actual salary offers in the College of Arts and Sciences will be based on education, experience, discipline, and relevant skills.
