Cornell Law School is seeking to hire an attorney to collaborate with and contribute to Path2Papers, a new deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) project at Cornell Law School. The selected candidate will consult with DACA beneficiaries about their visa options with a focus on employment-based options. They will also advise employers and law firms on visa options for DACA beneficiaries. The selected candidate may also prepare and file various immigration applications for DACA recipients in conjunction with the Immigration Law & Advocacy Clinic.


This is a part-time temporary position for approximately 25 hours a week. The position is benefits eligible. Anticipated start date for the position is August or September 2024. The position will continue until December 2025 or as long as funding is available. Additional hours may be available as the project grows.


The position may be conducted remotely within the United States (pending university approval). Please note that New York convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for the position if the work is conducted outside of NYS. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working outside NYS.


Occasional travel to Ithaca, NY, San Francisco, CA, and/or other project locations may be required. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.


Qualifications

Applicants must have a law degree (J.D.) and be admitted in good standing to a state bar. The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Strong research and writing skills.
  • Superior analytical skills and an ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively.
  • Self-motivation with the ability to take the initiative and follow through on projects to completion.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • A demonstrated commitment to immigration law.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in filing immigration petitions. Will consider clinical experience during law school.
  • Experience with employment-based immigration processes.
  • Experience working with undocumented and DACA communities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal consultations with DACA recipients, other immigrants in liminal status, and their employers.
  • Analyze cases and provide detailed follow-up information; strategize about next steps; connect individuals and employers with further legal assistance; ensure that all consultees have all questions answered.
  • Contribute to educational resources, such as handouts, webinars, and other media for impacted audiences.
  • Deliver webinars and other public-facing presentations.
  • Provide trainings and technical support for other immigration attorneys.
  • Stay apprised of relevant immigration law developments and help to develop resources or strategies in response.
  • Attend regular meetings with Path2Papers team members and collaborating organizations. Manage relationships with partner organizations.
  • As needed, collaborate on and/or complete immigration petitions on behalf of clients.

The pay range for this position is $35,000-$55,000 for 25 hours a week, dependent on experience. Please note that the below pay range is for full-time equivalent appointments.

$44,800.00 - $85,800.00

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
