Tenure Track Faculty Position - Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University

Tenure Track Faculty Position - Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University (Ithaca campus) invites applications for a faculty position (all ranks considered) in the broad areas of natural and engineered systems and their robustness, resiliency and sustainability in the face of climate change and extreme events. Some areas of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Resilience and/or robustness to extreme events, natural catastrophes, human-induced disasters, and compound hazards
  • Structures under mechanical and environmental fluctuations
  • Advances in subsurface and above-ground systems for sustainable climate solutions
  • Sustainable materials
  • Advances in sensing systems for emissions quantification, fate and transport of pollutants
  • The intersection of human, urban and ecosystem health
  • Marine energy
  • Resiliency and robustness to high percentages of intermittent energy sources
  • Coastal extremes and sea level rise
  • Water scarcity
  • Smart infrastructure
  • Inter-disciplinary approaches to robustness, resiliency and sustainability of nature and the built environment

Computational, theoretical, or experimental research programs are encouraged. In general, we prioritize the overall originality and promise of the applicant's work, rather than the sub-area of specialization. This includes fundamental science that informs applied research fields as well as impactful applied research. While not required, utilization of our significant laboratory facilities, including the Bovay Laboratory Complex, the Environmental Fluid Mechanics Teaching Laboratory, the DeFrees Hydraulics Laboratory, and the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source will be favorably considered.

The potential to form large research teams or radical collaborations to address complex problems will be viewed favorably, as well as potential linkages to Cornell Tech (NYC campus). Cornell University fosters interdisciplinary research and an atmosphere of cooperation through its Centers and Field system. Faculty will have outstanding opportunities and are expected to collaborate with faculty, research scientists, and graduate students across many Fields (e.g., Earth Sciences, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Operations Research and Information Engineering, Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Natural Resources and the Environment, Design and Environmental Analysis, Landscape Architecture), and Centers/Facilities (e.g., Center for Advanced Computing, Center for Applied Math, Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability, Institute for Computational Sustainability, AI for Science Institute, AFRL Regional Network Mid-Atlantic Hub).

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply. Applications must be submitted online at:  https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/26388

Candidates must hold a doctorate in an appropriate field and are expected to establish an outstanding,

externally funded research program as well as to contribute fully to both undergraduate and graduate instruction in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Applicants at the assistant professor level are strongly encouraged and candidates at the associate and full professor levels will also be considered. The salary range reflects an aggregate of qualifications and disciplines across Cornell University.

Assistant Professor: $79,400 - $211,600

Associate Professor: $97,500 - $239,000

Full Professor: $109,500 - $329,600
