Metabolomics Postdoctoral Associate

Biotechnology Resource Center Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility

Cornell Institute of Biotechnology - Research Division

This postdoctoral associate will assist the Director of the BRC Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility in the development and implementation of various sample preparation techniques and LC-/MS/MS techniques for metabolomics/lipidomics analysis, and subsequent MS data interpretation. The Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility is a Biotechnology Resource Center Service Facility that provides fee-for-service access to advanced technologies in protein and metabolite separations, identification and characterization of proteins and small molecules in complex biological samples through Liquid Chromatographic Mass Spectrometry.  Customers of the facility include faculty, staff and students from Cornell University, Weill Cornell Medicine, and external non-profit and for-profit institutions. The position will be part of a high-energy, cutting-edge Proteomics and Metabolomics Facility team and requires the ability to participate in multi-disciplinary research in a collaborative setting.

The incumbent in this position is responsible for LC-MS/MS analyses on a variety of samples prepared from complex biological sources, operation and maintenance of advanced LC-MS instruments, as well as several untargeted metabolomics/lipidomics-based database search engines and bioinformatics tools. The incumbent will need a strong organic chemistry background, and have significant knowledge of small molecule/drug metabolism with basic metabolic reactions, and MS-associated bioinformatics tools for untargeted metabolomics, identifications and targeted small molecule profiling. The incumbent will need to possess excellent MS data interpretation skills for interpretation of mass spectra for structural elucidation, and be able to routinely perform post-MS analysis data interpretation for customers. The incumbent in this position will be required to develop standard operating and quality assurance procedures covering sample preparation and multiple LC separation technologies for variable metabolomics samples, and to provide consultation on metabolomics project design and data analysis.

Additionally, this position will write a variety of technical and/or project reports for facility users and collaborative PIs. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the preparation of publications and grant proposals.  Strong oral and written communication skills are required. In addition, the incumbent is required to keep a detailed laboratory notebook, contribute to general orderliness of the laboratory and support lab health and safety compliance.

What we need:

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or related discipline with at least two years LC-MS experience with demonstrated understanding of current metabolomics technologies.
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation.
  • Excellent communication, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
  • Proficient computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Basic statistics knowledge.

Additional qualifications that would be extra helpful for the position:

  • Previous experience on operation of Thermo’s UltiMate3000 LC system and Orbitrap mass spectrometer.
  • Knowledge of Compound Discoverer and LipidSearch software tools.
  • Previous experience on SciexOS software.

Postdoctoral associates are appointed in 1-year terms, with renewal contingent on continued funding and successful performance.
