Public Health Lecturer

Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply. Cornell University is looking for a faculty member (lecturer) to join our Master of Public Health (MPH) teaching team. Faculty appointment will be made via the Department of Public & Ecosystem Health. Position Overview: The Lecturer will be responsible for teaching at least 9 credits of courses annually over three academic semesters (Fall, Spring, Summer), including Public Health Foundations 1, Public Health Foundations 2, One Health, and Writing Seminars. These courses not only introduce the conceptual foundation of public health and our unique approach to it, they also prepare students to write effectively in the discipline using evidence-based arguments. The Lecturer will lead two or more of these courses, possibly with co-instructors. Teaching will occur in person and in an online/hybrid environment. The Lecturer will also be responsible for mentoring students in writing-intensive projects (such as MPH capstone projects), ensuring student learning and application of knowledge and skills such that competence in key areas is demonstrated.

Although this position is focused on teaching and mentoring, some effort will be allocated for extramural public health service and engagement, for scholarly activities, including primary or collaborative public health research and publication, and for Program/University service.

Experience Required:

The successful candidate will have clear expertise in teaching—including the teaching of writing—and content expertise in areas of One Health, planetary health, systems thinking, social and environmental determinants of health, and public health theories. Specifically, the ideal candidate will have:

• A Master of Public Health, or an advanced degree (i.e., PhD) in a similar field with an emphasis on education and pedagogy;

• At least 5 years of experience teaching, including mentoring graduate or upper-level undergrad students via writing-intensive, applied coursework, demonstrating:

o clear expertise using One Health, planetary health, and systems thinking frameworks to teach, research, and address public health issues;

o experience in teaching diverse groups of students via creation of inclusive classrooms; and

o experience and expertise in developing and adapting curricula to augment student competence development and assessment.

• Training in, and experience teaching, writing as a foundational skill;

• At least 5 years of practical, public-health relevant experience (i.e., engaged research or practice)

This is a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty appointment, renewable every 3 years. Salary and title will be commensurate with credentials and experience.

We will begin reviewing applications on April 24, 2023, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applications must include: (a) Cover letter including statement of qualifications for this position (up to 2 pages); (b) Curriculum vitae; (d) Teaching statement (up to 2 pages); and (e) Names of three references (to be contacted after review). Applicants are invited to submit a Statement of contribution to diversity (1 page).

Questions about the position and the search can be sent to the search committee chair, Dr. Amelia Greiner Safi at alg52@cornell.edu
