Postdoctoral Research Associate in volatile budgets and their role in volcanic processes

Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

We seek a postdoctoral research associate with expertise in cutting-edge petrological tools to study volatile budgets and their role in volcanic processes. The research will be under the direction of Prof. Esteban Gazel (https://gazelresearchgroup.eas.cornell.edu). We are particularly interested in scientists with previous expertise in reconstructing the volatile evolution of volcanic materials using melt/fluid inclusions coupled with diffusion clocks. The successful candidate will have access to cutting-edge facilities at Cornell, including micro thermometry, experimental reheating of melt inclusions with fO2 control, Raman and FTIR, and LA-ICP-MS/MS. The start date of this position is August 15, 2023, but a flexible start date is possible. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the expectation of renewal with satisfactory performance for at least one additional year.

Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in the Earth sciences
  • Proficiency in science communication (written and oral) with evidence of peer review publications.
  • Experience with sample preparation and analyses of melt/fluid inclusions
  • Expertise with measurements and modeling needed for diffusion chronometry.

Assets:

  • Ability to contribute to an inclusive working environment, including interaction with researchers at all levels in our lab.
  • Experience with in-situ SIMS, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, LA-ICP-MS.

Applications should be submitted at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/24670 and should include the following documents: 1) CV; 2) short statement of research interests; 3) names and contact information for three references.
