Applications are being sought for a Postdoctoral Associate position in Engineering Education in Engineering Learning Initiatives (ELI) - a teaching and learning-focused program within the College of Engineering at Cornell University.  The Postdoctoral Associate will help develop, implement, and assess ELI’s expanding programs and initiatives related to teaching assistant development, peer education, and ongoing innovation of active and collaborative learning spaces, practices, and communities which support student learning, belonging, and success in the College. 

Engineering Learning Initiatives enhances the learning environment in Cornell University’s College of Engineering by promoting evidence-supported practices in teaching and learning. ELI programs empower students by facilitating student-centered, inclusive, collaborative, and experiential learning opportunities within supportive and accessible communities. We provide impactful experiences for graduate and undergraduate students which aim to improve learning outcomes, self-efficacy, and belonging as engineering students. We strive to both inspire and support students’ persistence and development as peer educators, researchers, leaders, collaborators, and lifelong learners.  ELI has a long history of implementing impactful programs to support learning and development among engineering students.

We seek a developing scholar and teacher within Engineering Education, or an Engineering or STEM field, who is passionate about teaching and learning, and about assessment to inform ongoing innovation toward enhancing the student learning experience.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will work intensively with ELI’s Engineering Teaching Assistant Development program, and also with the newly-piloted Interactive Learning Collaborative component of our TA Development portfolio.  With the guidance of ELI’s Associate Director, the incumbent will engage with the TA Development Program’s team of eight graduate TA consultants, helping to inform the ongoing improvement of training content, as well as the development of the consultant team as peer educators and facilitators.  The position will play a key role in data management, communications, formative evaluation, and assessment related to the TA development program.  The incumbent will also work with the ELI Associate Director to develop and implement the new Interactive Learning Collaborative (ILC) program.  The ILC supports TAs to develop and implement short active learning interventions into course lectures to improve student learning outcomes in the courses.  The Post-doctoral Associate will work together with the course TAs to help inform and guide their ideas, and to track implementation and outcomes for assessment of changes in teaching practice and of student learning outcomes. 

In addition to the TA Development Program and the Interactive Learning Collaborative, the Post-doctoral Associate position will work in collaboration with Engineering Learning Initiatives staff and students to help ensure the success of ELI’s many strategic goals and initiatives, including:

  • Expanding cross-fertilization among all of ELI’s peer-educator programs, including supporting the development of a new Cornell student chapter of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE).
  • More frequent collaboration across units and partners to enhance and synergize across college and university initiatives – including with the McCormick Engineering Teaching Excellence Institute, Diversity Programs in Engineering, Cornell’s Center for Teaching Innovation, and with discipline-based education research efforts within engineering departments.
  • Continued research to assess program impacts and determine best strategies and approaches; as well as continued dissemination to contribute to, and engage in, these inquiries and discussions within engineering education and teaching and learning communities more broadly.

This position will provide a rich mentor ship in successful educational program development, implementation, assessment, and continual improvement, in support of engineering students’ learning.  Cornell hosts a vibrant community of scholars and teachers, working both within and across disciplines, who are encouraged and supported in the development and sharing of innovative, and highly effective, strategies to promote student learning.  On-campus networking and collaboration opportunities are plentiful.  Travel to appropriate conferences for dissemination of program outcomes and best practices, and for ongoing training and professional development, will also be supported.

Position Requirements:

  • PhD in engineering education, education, engineering, or STEM.
  • Teaching experience, in engineering preferred;
  • Experience with educational research and/or program assessment or evaluation.
