Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

As part of the university's comprehensive vaccination program, all Cornell employees are required to have and provide proof of an FDA-or WHO-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine or have obtained a university-approved disability/medical or religious exemption, regardless of their role and work location.

New hires are required to provide documentation showing full vaccination status (that is, completion of two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or one shot of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson) before their first day of work. If a new hire's vaccination is not complete or information is not received by their start date, the first day of work will be delayed. It is possible in some cases that an offer of employment may be withdrawn.

The Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University will hire two postdoctoral fellows to develop new undergraduate learning studios and assess their efficacy in use for multiple classes. The successful candidates will engage in building educational modules for these learning studios, observing students, and measuring learning outcomes. This work is supported by a Cornell University Active Learning Initiative grant (PI: Brian Kirby) described at https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2022/03/active-learning-initiative-awards-5-new-grants; the launch of the first learning studio is described at https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2022/05/forklift-learning-studio-elevates-active-learning-engineers.

Job description:

We are implementing an undergraduate learning studios model to redesign laboratories -- in which studios are developed around relevant engineering systems and these systems are used to provide real-world, active learning experiences for students in a multitude of classes. The learning studios are expected to link undergraduate cohorts to each other, cause interchange between learner and expert modalities, link different courses to each other, link theory to practice, and link course outcomes to career development.

Each postdoc will be involved in development of 1-2 studios and will interface with 2-3 classes. The postdoc will be directly supervised and supported by Prof. Kirby but also (a) work with multiple faculty instructors in the department, (b) collaborate with department instructional aids, (c) join in the vibrant peer learning community of the staff and faculty of the Cornell Active Learning Initiative with an enthusiastic cohort of ALI postdoctoral fellows across campus. Postdocs will develop and document course materials emphasizing active and inductive learning and real-life applications. Additional duties include developing and implementing metrics for the learning objectives of each class and using those metrics to determine the efficacy of the course interventions. Opportunities to teach Cornell engineering classes may also be available. Postdocs will be expected to generate archival publications in the engineering education literature.
