The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University is located in the scenic Finger Lakes wine region of New York State, and its interdepartmental Viticulture and Enology (V&E) bachelor’s degree program is unique among U.S. schools east of the Rocky Mountains. The V&E major was established by CALS in 2008 to address the needs of the rapidly growing Eastern and Midwestern US grape and wine industries, including the approximately 350 wineries in New York. The V&E teaching program complements CALS’ long-standing reputation for excellence in research and extension on fermentation science, viticulture, and related fields. The program currently has about 30 undergraduates in the major and provides instruction to over 600 students per year across a range of survey and specialized courses.
The Section of Horticulture in the School of Integrative Plant Science in CALS welcomes applications for a Lecturer in Viticulture to instruct in the V&E program. The successful applicant will benefit from Cornell’s cutting-edge research and teaching resources; interactions with top faculty in viticulture, enology and other life sciences; teaching vineyards including plantings of V. vinifera, hybrid and native grapes; and new facilities for winemaking, brewing, distillation, and fruit wine production, housed in the recently renovated Stocking Hall Food Science Building.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:
Required Qualifications:
An M.S. degree or its equivalent in viticulture or a closely related field and experience in vineyard management is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Ph.D. degree, experience in teaching, experience in vineyard management, and knowledge of other areas of plant science are preferred.
Term:
The initial appointment will be for three years and is renewable based on available worksuccessful performance and continued funding.
Salary:
Negotiable and commensurate with experience.
