The Department of Food Science at Cornell University is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate who will be responsible for experiment implementation and data analysis as part of multi-year research at the intersection of microbial food safety, metagenomics, and machine learning. The post-doc should be an experienced scientist motivated by the opportunity for independent as well as collaborative research experiences that improve our understanding of the microbiome of food production environments. The ideal candidate will have strong bioinformatics skills and be capable of applying the principles of genomics and metagenomics to the problems of complex food systems. The individual will be required to lead Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data analysis in the Linux/Unix environment and should have experience with programs such as R and/or coding in scripting languages such as Python or Perl. Specific previous experience with metagenomic methods is preferred. In addition, the post-doc will be responsible for maintaining documentation of all code and pipelines developed. Related skills could include experience in microbial evolution, metagenomics, or comparative omics approaches.


This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of extension dependent on available work, continued funding, and success full performance. 


Anticipated start date is between January 1 and June 1 2022.


Anticipated Division of Time

The post-doc will be required to perform experiments (25%), data analysis (60%), and participate in project leadership (15%) in the development of novel solutions for use in food and agriculture. Experiences include stakeholder engagement and translation of research findings and new tools for diverse end-users. This individual will utilize multiple techniques in computational biology; perform comparative taxonomic and functional analyses; develop applications of metagenomic tools relevant to the food industry; and coordinate among graduate students, industry advisors, and collaborating labs to facilitate the completion of research objectives. The ideal candidate will also have experience with standard molecular biology techniques, including NGS library preparation


Requirements

The successful post-doc applicant will be required to hold, at the point of hire, a Ph.D. in food science, genomics, microbial ecology, biostatistics or related discipline.


Supervision Exercised

This research is designed to be performed by one post-doc with the help of one graduate or undergraduate student. The post-doc will be supervised by Dr. Abby Snyder. Research supervision will include individual meetings with the project PI and group meetings with the entire lab. Annual participation in the project directors meeting and/or annual research conference is expected. Monthly progress summaries will be used to clarify project direction and goals.
