The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an immediate opening for a Senior Extension Associate – Worker Rights & Equity Associate within The Worker Institute in the Extension/Outreach Division of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations is responsible for extension programming and administration within one or more thematic areas. The Senior Extension Associate is responsible for developing and delivering programs and services that are closely aligned with the strategic mission and core values of the ILR School, and for monitoring quality, impact, and outcomes of education, research, training, technical assistance, and consulting activities of the program. The Senior Extension Associate will participate with other academic staff in setting thematic area goals and will annually set individual programmatic and budgetary goals with the Executive and Academic Director. This position of Senior Extension Associate reports to the Executive Director or the Academic Director of the Worker Institute.

Senior Extension Associate is an academic non-tenure track, term position with an initial three-year appointment. The position may be reappointed based on recommendations by the appropriate Director and Associate Dean as well as available funding and work.

Project Related Emphasis:
The Worker Rights and Equity Associate is responsible for developing and delivering innovative research, policy applications and educational programs that address the persistent problems of economic inequality in America by addressing challenges faced by workers in growing sectors of the American economy. Strategic collaborations will aim to enhance collective bargaining rights and representation for all workers, with an emphasis placed on advancing new models of collective representation in sectors traditionally excluded from labor rights protections (i.e. low wage & immigrant workers, service workers and gig-economy workers). Understanding of issues of diversity and inclusion as key components that advance workplace equity for women and immigrant workers in the gig economy and growing service economy.

The Senior Extension Associate will provide substantial expertise and collaborative guidance to unions and worker justice organizations and advance the presence of the Worker Institute in field of worker- focused policy innovation through local, state, and national professional and advocacy networks and ongoing public programming. Position will contribute to writing articles and reports, and contribute to financial integrity of programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a social science, economics, government and public administration, policy or law, with relevant expertise related to racial and economic inequality.
  • 7 – 10 years of life and work experience with unions, worker justice, community organizations, government, or advocacy or educational organizations in a role that includes policies and practices to advance racial, gender and social justice, and addresses income inequality.
  • Experience in both qualitative and quantitative analysis; and a strong understanding of mixed-methods research that incorporates workers’ voices
  • Expertise in industry and workforce research and an ability to communicate the policy and organizing implications of research that seeks to raise industry standards for low-wage and new sectors of the economy (e.g., direct care and the gig economy).
  • Relevant professional leadership and network development at the state, regional, national, and/or international areas in relevant professional, trade, policy, or public networks.
  • Minimum of three to six years conducting training to relevant target audience, and/or conducting research in the thematic content area.
  • Demonstrated writing ability and scholarly record in the thematic content area (articles in peer-reviewed journals, articles in trade publications, research and project reports, informational brochures, policy briefs, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in collaborative environments and to contribute to the innovation and outcome success of a team.
  • Experience and desire to work in an action-oriented research setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one to three years demonstrated experience in large project management (e.g. several staff and research budgets).
  • Minimum of one to three years demonstrated experience in promoting thematic area program teaching, consultation, and research services to regional, state or national networks through the use of in-person, print, and electronic mediums.
  • Minimum of one to three years demonstrated experience in successful grant writing and grant management.
  • Minimum of one to three years of experience with distance learning.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.
