Post-doctoral Associate

Ithaca, NY

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: natural and human systems; food, energy and environmental resources; and social, physical and economic well-being.  CALS is fundamentally invested in improving the lives of people, their environments and their communities both in New York state and around the world.

The Abbaspourrad Lab is one of the largest cross-disciplinary research labs at Cornell University. The PI and members leverage by successfully established multidisciplinary research areas include (i) bioassays for detection, separation, and manipulation of bacteria and viruses using microfluidics; (ii) synthesis of polymers and small molecules; (iii) encapsulation and functionalization of ingredients and bioactives; (iv) identification and conversion of waste to value-added products, and (v) big data, holistic modeling, and simulation.

The lab is well-equipped with a variety of instrumentation to perform both the experimental and theoretical work in this area, housing both a full analytical facility with in-house instrumentation as well as spacious prototyping and experimentation labs. Researchers in the Abbaspourrad Lab are experienced in all aspects of academic and industrial research activity, from experimental design and interdisciplinary collaboration, through scale-up and commercialization techniques. The team has conducted research on behalf of many companies and federal agencies through sponsored research projects that resulted in the publication of more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and 13 patents; these opportunities provide the greatest training and experience to tackle projects that are highly complex and interdisciplinary.

Position Function

The post-doctoral associate will be responsible for project management, designing and carrying out the experiments, performing the characterization, reporting, and presenting data to sponsor(s) for the assigned projects. We are seeking talented researchers in areas of bioactive (i.e., small molecules) encapsulation and gene modification-CRISPR.

Requirements

Academic training: a Ph.D. in food science, chemistry, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, material science, or polymer chemistry; Demonstrated experience with encapsulation of small molecules targeting various conditions such as acidic, basic, and thermal; Have proven track record of bioengineering and gene modification; Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities, troubleshoot technical issues, and develop and execute detailed technical protocols; Strong documentation and written and oral communication skills; And ability to work independently, self-motivated, and as part of a team.

Important Note:

The hired post-docs are required to generate new ideas and draft the potential proposals.

Reporting:

The post-doc associate will email a weekly report in the form of PowerPoint slides. The slides must include acquired data (images, graphs, etc.) and a description of each data presented in the slide. The post-doc will attend weekly group meetings and present research findings once a month to all members of the group meeting. While working on research projects funded by companies, the post-doc associate may need to travel to present her/his data, visit company/plant sites and meet with scientists 2 to 4 times per year, depending on project requirements.

Supervision Exercised:

The research is designed to be performed with one post-doc associate and the help of one master student or an undergraduate. Supervision will encompass the weekly meeting, brainstorming, and evaluation of the project progress, the monthly report prepared by the post-doc on what was planned initially, and the outcomes achieved. This approach will help to direct the post-doc and student to get the desired outcomes with enhanced efficiency.

The post-doctoral associate opportunity requires an individual that is available to work a non-standard schedule as needed to conduct research and experiments. This is not a typical 9 am-5 pm, Monday through Friday position due to the many active projects that are in process in the Abbaspourrad Lab.
