Tenure-track Faculty Position in Biomedical Engineering Education Research, Cornell University (Ithaca, NY)

Cornell University's Nancy E. and Peter C. Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in Engineering Education Research. The appointment is expected at the Assistant Professor level, but outstanding candidates at all ranks will be considered. Candidates must have an earned doctorate in engineering, STEM education, or a closely related field, with a demonstrated potential for success as an independent education research investigator and a classroom educator. Responsibilities include the pursuit of a program of scholarly research in Biomedical Engineering Education; teaching courses in Biomedical Engineering; and advising undergraduate and graduate students.

The Meinig School is conducting two parallel faculty searches in biomedical engineering education. This tenure-track discipline-based engineering education research (DBER) position is intended for scholars who will establish an independent, nationally recognized education research program, including mentoring Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars and advancing the field through innovative scholarship, external funding, and national leadership. In contrast, the School’s Teaching Professor position  is intended for educators who will provide leadership in undergraduate education through excellence and innovation in teaching, curriculum development, and student mentoring and advising; candidates for that position will be evaluated primarily on the strength and potential of their teaching, educational leadership, and contributions to the biomedical engineering curriculum.

Candidates must show outstanding research and potential for excellence in teaching and research; senior candidates are expected to have exceptional accomplishments in research and teaching. We are especially interested in candidates who will contribute to the inclusive excellence of our academic community through their research, teaching, mentoring, and service. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering is in the Duffield College of Engineering on Cornell’s campus in Ithaca, New York. Cornell has a growing community of scholars engaged in Engineering Education Research (EER) and Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) across the sciences and engineering. The recently established Duffield Engineering Education Research Institute provides a community for and an institutional investment in research, collaboration, and action focused on how engineers learn, how innovation can shape educational systems, and how evidence can be used to improve teaching, learning, and the professional formation of engineers.

The BME department has a decades-long culture of educational innovation and outreach. Current efforts include engineering education research at the intersection of pedagogy, assessment, and generative AI methods; experiential and design-based learning major outreach programs to local-area middle- and high-school science teachers as well as science museums; and the integration of active learning throughout the biomedical engineering curriculum. Educational innovation is also a strategic priority across the Duffield College of Engineering and Cornell University.

Faculty engaged in discipline-based education research collaborate through the Duffield Engineering Education Research group, the Cornell Discipline-Based Education Research group, the McCormick Teaching Excellence Institute in Engineering, and the university-wide Center for Teaching Innovation and Active Learning Initiative. This community is filled with disciplinary experts who are passionate about their teaching, engaging in education research literature, and keen to discuss how to improve teaching and learning for students throughout multiple disciplines. The ideal candidate will benefit from strong collaborative ties to other discipline-based education researchers in the Duffield College of Engineering and across campus and to the major teaching/education centers, and will contribute to a culture of excellence in education research and of continual improvement in pedagogical approaches, both in their own teaching and through their work with faculty colleagues.
