The Biotechnology Resource Center (BRC) within the Cornell Institute of Biotechnology is seeking a Director for the Proteomics and Metabolomics core facility, a mass spectrometry core that supports a broad community of Cornell researchers in the life sciences as well as external customers.


The Director provides leadership, management, and vision for the facility. The Director oversees all aspects of proteomics and metabolomics services, including experimental design consultation, advanced mass spectrometry workflows, and data analysis. In addition to guiding facility operations, the Director actively supports research through consultation, training, and collaboration with faculty and trainees, including participation in research projects as senior personnel or co-PI.


The position includes personnel management; financial management; advanced user training and education; acquiring and maintaining a portfolio of advanced instrumentation and associated software; grant writing; and research project consultation with diverse academic users. The Director works closely with senior faculty, a facility advisory board, and other BRC core directors to ensure innovative services, maintain a strong user community, and expand the facility’s capabilities in mass spectrometry–based proteomics and metabolomics.


The Director leads a team of two Research Associates, two Research Support Specialists, and a Laboratory Technician. 


Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  •  Develop and implement proteomics and metabolomics methods and services provided by the BRC.
  • Provide scientific leadership for proteomics and metabolomics scientists and technical staff providing core facility services, including mass spectrometry and data analysis.
  • Provide consultation and user support for accomplishing research goals, including support for defined project design, sample preparation, selection of data analysis workflow, and training for data interpretation through weekly consultation or annual workshops in both proteomics and metabolomics.
  • Supervise academic research associates and technical staff in the Proteomics and Metabolomics facility.
  • Manage cost recovery operations, including establishing service rates and overseeing facility budget.
  • Identify instrumentation needs and funding opportunities for acquisition of new technologies and development of practical analytical methods for fee-for-service operations.
  • Prepare and present quarterly and annual operating reports to facility faculty advisory board.
  • Promote facility operations through engagement with Cornell and external users and through outreach platforms (e.g., website, brochures, and Institute communications).

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Biology, or other biochemical discipline.
  • Extensive background and recognized stature in the field of proteomics and protein/peptide mass spectrometry.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging instrumentation and technical workflows for liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS).
  • Expertise in LC-MS-based metabolomics, lipidomics, and targeted small molecule analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a broad range of academic users (faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and others) to provide research consultation and advanced training.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues across sample preparation, data acquisition workflows, and instrumentation to maintain efficient operation.
  •  Supervisory and operational management experience, including data-driven analysis and interpretation; instrument usage management, cost tracking, and financial forecasting for cost recovery operations.

The initial appointment is a 3-year term renewable contingent upon continued funding and successful performance. 


Hiring Range for this Position:

$150,000 - $200,000
