About the College, School, or Department

The Software Development department within Cornell University Library IT creates and supports applications that focus on library cataloging and discovery systems, digital preservation, online exhibits, publication repositories, websites, and collaborative use of linked data. Our work impacts a broad audience of academic users.

The senior application developer will join our Digital Lifecycle Services team, situated within Cornell University Library Information Technologies (CUL-IT), and have a substantial impact on the evolution of the Library’s custom applications and integrations. CUL-IT creates intuitive and inclusive user experiences and application integrations with a focus on library cataloging and discovery systems, digital preservation, publication repositories, and linked data. The successful candidate will work closely with other developers, DevOps engineers, Library staff, and selected communities of scholars and researchers.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Lead development and maintenance of intuitive and innovative applications and systems integrations
  • Foster best practices among team members; provide training and guidance to CUL developer colleagues
  • Lead requirements-gathering sessions with stakeholders at all levels of technical literacy
  • Maintain and enhance existing library web applications, analyze and fix software bugs, coordinate group troubleshooting
  • Lead project code reviews
  • Manage the deployment process for team-developed applications
  • Develop technical solutions for emerging program areas and participate in their programs
  • Lead systems architecture design and decision-making, and coordinate troubleshooting
  • Effectively communicate conceptual ideas and system architecture rationales visually, verbally, and in writing with user advocacy a constant priority
  • Present results to internal and external audiences

What We Need

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and five to seven (5-7) years of experience in programming or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive expertise in multiple programming languages, especially Java, Ruby, and model-view-controller (MVC) frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails; experience with JavaScript and JavaScript frameworks for building user interfaces.
  • Familiarity with various markup formats and structured data formats (ex: HTML, CSS and JSON).
  • Experience with enterprise-scale software information systems.
  • Adept at leveraging and integrating off-the-shelf and open-source technologies; experience implementing application and/or data integrations.
  • Ability to quickly learn other programming languages, frameworks and other technologies, as needed.
  • Ability to lead collective planning and problem-solving/troubleshooting of system architectures.
  • Ability to facilitate information-gathering conversations with subject matter experts and stakeholders to identify needs.
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal and communication skills; ability to work frictionlessly with both internal and external partners.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members. 
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and well-being.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in university and/or library information technology.
  • Experience playing an IT team leadership role, informally or formally.
  • Familiarity with library platforms and common library service technologies (ex: DSpace, FOLIO, Blacklight, Spotlight, Solr, etc.).
  • Experience or desire to contribute to open source software.
  • Experience using tools such as JIRA or GitHub for issue tracking, Git or another source control repository, and one or more integrated development environments (IDE).
  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and/or other major cloud platforms.
  • Ability to integrate real-time information feeds, local and distributed databases, content repositories, APIs, and other web services with applications.
  • Familiarity with Agile programming and best practices such as test-driven development, continuous integration, and working collaboratively in sprints.
